What is a Back Link?
Back links are exactly like the word says…a “link back” to your website from another website, forum, blog, Facebook page, directory or anywhere a link has been created on the Internet that links back to the originating website that may provide traffic or value through relationship.

What is PageRank?
PageRank is the name for an algorithm created by Larry Page of Google to give a website a value based on many variables. It has become the standard method of valuing your website and generally the higher your websites PR Ranking the better you will do in the search engines.
PageRank is a value from 0 to 10 and can be made visible by using Google’s toolbar and visiting the website of interest. "Page Rank" and is a function of the Google Toolbar which you can download HERE.
Googles page ranking system is based on over 200 algorithms that measure variables related to your website to determine how valuable the information would be to a person searching for that information on Google's Search Engine. Building back links is an important part of getting your website to the front page of Google, Yahoo or Bing search engines. The reasoning is simple...if your site has a huge amount of backlinks from High PR ranking sites they feel that you must have something valuable or these high PR ranking sites would never link to you so that earns you points.
If your site has many back links from other sites with related topics to yours that adds value while reaching your target audience and if you have "Regional" back links that will also give you value. The Canadian Directory list below is "Regional" Directories for Canadian sites and you will find the same around the world for each region.
Is an Email Account Required to get back links?
The answer is sometimes it is necessary to click an “Activation” link sent to an email address when a link is submitted. For the purpose of building back links we usually use a Gmail email address because after time the email account will probably attract lots of spam so it may need to be dropped at some point. You would never want all that spam coming to your everyday email address.
Some Directories will require that you subscribe to their newsletter to get a link. It is worth it to get a listing in a high PR ranking directory or a niche directory that could bring you traffic. That again is why we use an email account like GMail as we may have to dump it at some point and create a new email account for Internet marketing purposes.
When building the back links for any of your sites it is a good policy to record the back link into a pre-defined spreadsheet that is used to track information about each back link. Download my SEO BackLink Tracking Spreadsheet
Back links where the other site requires a reciprocal link are generally not as valuable and not preferred.

ePaper and Social Publishing Sites
This is where you would post your company flyer, brochure, product information or any promotional documents that you way want to share with the world. Social Publishing websites have huge traffic and can add valuable (usually qualified) traffic to your website. Qualified because they have obviously viewed the Flyer and have an interest in learning more or purchasing the products or services your Flyer displayed.
I can tell you from experience that you will probably get traffic from every Document, Flyer, Brochure or whatever you post on a Social Publishing site like the ones listed below. Watching video online gets huge traffic so if you can create a video for your product or service and post it on any or all of the sites below you should also see measurable traffic back to your website where you can convert the viewers to purchasers or members.
